![]() ![]() Night Sky with Exit Wounds engages historical events that live in our collective memory: the assassination of JFK, September 11th and, above all, the Vietnam War and its afterlives. ![]() In the body, where everything has a price,Ĭalled “Threshold,” the poem situates the collection in an in-between. they want me to remember / their memories / and i keep on remembering mine.” Night Sky nudges the reader toward the wisdom of the quiet voice that insists, in the words of Lucille Clifton: “. Neither will he relinquish the writing of history to those invested in domination and empire. Vuong refuses to cede long and complex cultural histories to the flashiness of the only-now. Still, one reason Vuong’s debut collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds feels so exquisite, so necessary, is that he offers another way to hold the present moment. ![]() ![]() The work of Saigon-born, Brooklyn-based poet Ocean Vuong-who at only twenty-seven has received a Whiting Award, been profiled in the New Yorker, and seen his name populate lists like the ones above-seems, perhaps, an unlikely occasion for revising this cultural fixation on novelty. See the proliferation of lists declaring the literary world’s next protégés: Muzzle Magazine’s “30 under 30” Buzzfeed’s “20 under 40 Debut Writers You Need to Be Reading” the New Yorker’s “20 under 40.” There is an ethic of disposability built into this fetish: what is new cannot endure in newness. We exalt the original, the innovative, the experimental. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Parents and police are pretty much absent most of the time, especially considering the deaths and life-crippling injuries associated with the game. ![]() The focus is primarily on four main protagonists: two females graduates – Heather and Nat, and two males – Bishop and Dodge.ĭiscussion: I found some aspects of the plot very unrealistic. The danger involved doesn’t deter them from putting their lives on the line unfortunately, all of the characters, most of whom come from broken homes, are very deficient in self-esteem, and looking for love in all the wrong places. They are desperate to get out of of their dead-end small town of Carp, New York, and maybe be able to realize their dreams, most of which are pretty much impossible without lots of cash. But the prize money – this year it is $67,000 – is too tempting for these teens to resist. In the seven years the game has been played, four players have died and one has been left paralyzed. The final remaining contestant wins a large pot of money. Each participant has to pass a series of ridiculously risky challenges, with two unknown judges (acting via flyers and an anonymous email account) determining what they will be, allocating points, and knocking losers out of the game. This story begins the day after the protagonists have graduated from high school, at which time the traditional secret game of “Panic” begins. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is just not that they collate out to one single story altogether. A racing thriller of sorts, this is the story of They, those horrifying, intimidating elements of the society that act as a watchdog, stripping it of peace and tranquillity, targeting artists for their crime of vision and aesthetics. I have read a few more after that and yet this one I feel has come across as a unique one. You can’t help but compare this book to The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd. Annabel has to unravel the mysteries surrounding her father’s household before something horrible befalls her. Her father has two assistants the cheerful and teasing day assistant Allen and the scary and brooding night assistant Edgar. Annabel’s only solace is her kind grandfather and her father’s assistants. To add to her dismay, there are a rash of grisly murders sweeping through Philadelphia. Annabel Lee makes the journey on her own and arrives to find a bleak and damp climate and a father who obviously doesn’t want her there. Then her and her mother are called home to live with her father in Philadelphia, her mother is very sick and doesn’t end up surviving long enough to make the journey. Moreau.Īnnabel Lee has lived most of her life in a far off middle eastern country with missionaries. He is one of the main characters in the story, but he didn’t have a ton of personality. While it wasn’t a bad story, it definitely didn’t have a ton to do with Edgar Allen Poe. I was eager to read this story because it is desribed as a gothic retelling of Edgar Allen Poe’s life/stories. ![]() I got an eGalley of this book to review through NetGalley.
